Day 2 at the Tables: Ups and Downs in a High-Stakes $100,000 Tournament

Day two of the tournament started with a mix of anticipation and realism. Starting in 42nd place out of 65 players with a relatively short stack of 17 big blinds, I knew it would be an uphill battle to climb the leaderboard.

For the first couple of hours, the cards simply weren’t cooperating. I barely saw a playable hand, a frustrating period that tested my patience and discipline. It’s a common experience in poker – sometimes the cards just don’t fall your way. This is known as being Card Dead.

Blinds were $6k/$12k/$12k. Coke Dan (he is called that because he always has a coke with him when he plays) leads out for $35k. The next three players fold. I look down at AQ both hearts. I have $25k left and push All In for less than the $35k bet. Two more players fold and Doug makes the original call. Flop comes 9h 6h 10s. Dan leads out with a large bet, Doug folds. We turn up our cards and Dan has QQ. I show my AQ of hearts, four to the flush! Turn was 3s, river was a……… 9c. I missed all those hearts and the remaining Aces. I went out where I started, 42nd place. BTW, both Dan and Doug made the final table with a minimum payout shy of $4,000. $45k for first place. Results have not been posted so I do not know who won yet.

While the result wasn’t what I hoped for, it was a valuable learning experience. Poker is a game of ups and downs, and even the best players face periods of adversity. The key is to maintain a positive mindset, learn from every hand, and come back stronger in the next tournament.

I’m incredibly grateful for the support of my friends and fellow players throughout the day. Their camaraderie made the experience truly enjoyable, and I’m already looking forward to my next time I get to play!

With James – Second in chips to start the day – finished 12th place!
With Woody – I call him Woody because he reminds me of Woody Harrelson! Great player and was at my table as well!
Doug out to support me!
My only double up that took me back over $100k
Final hand for me. My AQh < QQ
Final Table - Coke Dan standing far right, Doug sitting with grey hat in center.
